Who will you work with at Dive & Glide Scuba while earning your NAUI Certification? 

​

Keith Hintz, co-owner of Dive & Glide Scuba since its inception, has been a NAUI professional since 1997.  He's our lead instructor and will be your guide through your NAUI training.  He works out of both our Bay City and Midland locations.  With over 30 years of experience as an instructor and gear tech, Keith is definitely your go-to guy for training or gear questions.

Angie Klapish-Widmer, co-owner of Dive & Glide Scuba since it opened in 1997, is your contact for registration, scheduling, eLearning, and billing.  She primarily works out of our Midland location and is likely going to be your first point of contact if you email us or complete online registration.

Jacob Nelson, is a diving instructor and one of our sales associates.  If you visit our Bay City location, you'll likely meet Jacob in the shop.  His first certification was NAUI Open Water Diver, so if you have questions as you consider getting started in diving, he's a great resource for information on training and gear.

Welcome to the wonders of the underwater world!  The NAUI Snorkeler course is an entry-level program designed to educate snorkelers on the skills and knowledge to safely observe underwater attractions from or near the surface of the water.  Maximum depth during training is 15 feet (5 meters).

If you are interested in learning how to use basic snorkeling equipment or increase your comfort in the water while exploring, this course is for you.  During the 2-hour pool session, our NAUI SCUBA instructor will teach you all you need to know to effectively and safely move across the water and submerge yourself for a better view.  

You will learn about safety and problem management for apnea training, the function, use and care of snorkeling equipment, and proper techniques to comfortably explore on the surface and in shallow water zones.


Everyone ages 6 and up, in good physical condition, is welcome to participate.

NAUI Skin Diver


Don't stay on the surface...learn to breath-hold dive for a better view!  Enhance your snorkeling skills with this 2-hour course, followed by a trip to the lake for 2 dives.  Fun for the whole family, whether you are an accomplished swimmer or someone who has never spent time in the water.  Upon successful completion you will receive your Skin Diver certification card.


This certification course is for everyone ages 8 and up, in good physical condition.

NAUI Try SCUBA / Passport Diver 

 

​Imagine what it’s like to slip below the surface and continue breathing while you float weightlessly underwater!  

 

Our NAUI Try SCUBA Diving Course, a 2-hour pool session, is designed to simply introduce you to SCUBA diving and is an ideal opportunity to see if SCUBA diving is for you.  Try SCUBA in the pool, or in a lake, the choice is yours.  

After your SCUBA introduction, you can become a Passport SCUBA Diver by completing NAUI's free introductory online eLearning, and two open water dives.  With your SCUBA "Passport" you may continue to enjoy SCUBA diving under the direct supervision of a NAUI Instructor for up to 12 months.  And, engaging in such activities during 12 months following your Passport training automatically extends your Passport for an additional 12 months. 

As an active NAUI Passport Holder, you are encouraged to continue your diving education.  If you enroll in our NAUI SCUBA Diver Course within six months of your Passport experience, your skills proficiency and Passport fee may be credited towards the requirements and cost of your NAUI SCUBA Diver Course. 


Individuals ages 8+ may participate in the NAUI Try Scuba confined water pool skills portion of the program.   Individuals ages 10+ and in good physical condition may enroll in a NAUI Try SCUBA lake session and Passport Diver Course.

NAUI SCUBA Diver

Your underwater adventures begin here and when you've finished this course and your open water dives, you'll be ready to explore underwater all over the world!  Learn all about dive equipment, the science of diving, responsible diving practices, the environment and diving careers.  

​

A portion of this course may be done through online studies at home at your own pace.  Or, you can schedule sessions with our instructor.  You choose how you'd like to complete the book studies part of this course.  Three to four pool sessions round out your training, and then you're ready to display your skills to your instructor during Open Water Checkout Dives and become a fully certified SCUBA Diver!

Your NAUI SCUBA Diver course fee covers all class sessions, pool sessions, instructor fees, pool fees and use of a full set of SCUBA gear (excluding personal gear = mask, snorkel, fins, and boots).  Course fee does not include academic training materials and/or eLearning online;  these are available in various formats.  Inquire for details.

To obtain your NAUI SCUBA Diver certification to begin diving our underwater world, enroll in NAUI Open Water Certification with this course.  Or, complete your certification on your next warm-water trip by requesting Universal Referral Papers at the completion of your class and pool skills.

NAUI Open Water Certification

 

A continuation of our NAUI SCUBA Diver Course, this course is required to complete your SCUBA diver certification and obtain your NAUI SCUBA Diver certification card.  You will perform 4 dives in 2 days at a local lake.  Complete all the skills you learned in the pool at the lake to demonstrate to your NAUI SCUBA instructor you are ready to embark on your own adventures.

 

Your open water certification fees covers your open water checkout dives, instructor fees, use of a full set of SCUBA gear (excluding person gear = mask, snorkel, fins, boots), and your NAUI registration and certification card.

Everyone ages 10 and up, in good physical condition, is welcome to participate following the completion of a NAUI SCUBA Diver course.  (Junior certification is allowed for ages 10-14.)

​NAUI Advanced SCUBA Diver

 

This continuing education course is designed to introduce divers to a variety of SCUBA activities, while enhancing diving skills.  The course consists of two classroom sessions (or one classroom session and online training), one pool session and at least eight open water dives.  

 

Explore new dive sites and undertake exclusive activities under the supervision of our NAUI Instructor. This course allows individuals to learn about specialties and diving activities of particular interest. Your confidence and skill as a diver will increase while you experience the excitement of learning more about the underwater world.

Just a few of the many dives that may be included are shore diving, search and recovery, light salvage, boat diving, exploration and mapping navigation

diving with computers, night diving, limited visibility diving, deep diving to 130 feet (*deep diving is for ages 15 & up), underwater photography, and underwater metal detecting.

​NAUI Rescue SCUBA Diver

 

This course will increase your safety skills from what you have already learned as a Scuba Diver.  The SCUBA Rescue Diver course is designed to equip certified divers with additional self-rescue skills and to enable them to effectively intervene if their dive buddy experiences problems while diving.

Learn how to manage risks., effectively handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies, assist and transport divers, perform surface rescues.

perform rescues from depth involving both boat and shore based skin and SCUBA divers.  CPR and First Aid certifications are required to complete this course.

​NAUI Master SCUBA Diver

 

Gain the in-depth knowledge and experience that will distinguish you as a leader in any diving club or group. Thrill to the adventure of open-water dives in settings that will test skills and expand your diving capabilities and experience. Your success allows you to proudly carry the most coveted and respected certification card in recreational diving – the NAUI Master Scuba Diver card.

Certified divers who wish to increase their understanding and enjoyment choose to become Master SCUBA Divers.  Emphasis in this course focuses on student participation and practical application of knowledge in open water.  Lecture and discussion sessions prepare students for advancement to leadership roles.

Course includes online training, a minimum of two lecture/discussion sessions in the classroom, and a minimum of eight open water dives.  Required dives for the course include emergency procedures and rescue, deep/simulated diving, limited visibility diving, night diving, underwater navigation, search and recovery and light salvage.

​NAUI Deep Diver

 

Does the thought of deep diving fascinate you?  Enroll in our NAUI Deep Diver course where you'll gain the knowledge and skills to plan and make enjoyable deep dives while minimizing risks of deep diving.  Deep diving is defined as dives made between 60 feet and 130 feet.  

Although this is not a decompression techniques course, you will learn about decompression procedures, nitrogen narcosis, decompression sickness, the use of dive computers and avoiding the need for stage decompression.  Your course will cover such topics as the purpose, problems, hazards, planning, preparation, equipment, air supplies, personnel, techniques, gas management, emergency procedures, and depth limits for recreational diving.

​NAUI Drysuit Diver

​

Drysuits were once exclusively used by professionals or for severe diving conditions, in extremely cold water, contaminated water, or deep wreck diving. These days, however, many sport recreational divers use drysuits too.

Certified divers who wish to dry uit dive choose to obtain their NAUI Drysuit Diver certification to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to safely dive with drysuits.  The added benefit of the class is learning how to properly maintain the suit.  Discover the best way to care for and store a drysuit, so it will bring diving comfort and enjoyment for years.

We want to see you skilled, confident and happy with your dry suit.

​NAUI Night Diver

​

If you’re like most divers, you’ll love exploring at night even more than during the daylight.  This course is to provide the diver with the skills and knowledge needed to minimize the risks of diving at night.  our instructor will teach you about planning and preparation, night diving equipment, procedures, potential problems, hazards, navigation and buddy system techniques.

Your course fee covers classroom sessions, pool sessions, instructor fees, open water dives, use of tanks and weights and your NAUI registration and certification card.

​

Course fees do not cover academic training materials or SCUBA gear for open water dives.  Students are expected to use their own gear, or may rent gear at half price.  Charter operator fees for boat diving and wreck diving are also not included.

​NAUI Nitrox Diver

 

Extend your bottom time.  Lessen your surface interval.  And maximize every dive!  Learn how to choose the proper blend of Nitrox for your dive profile, determine maximum depth limits for your Nitrox mixture, analyze your breathing mixture, and plan and safely execute each and every dive.
​
Your instructor will teach you the physiology of oxygen and nitrogen, advantages, disadvantages, and risks of Nitrox, oxygen toxicity, hazards and precautions of handling oxygen, the concept of Equivalent Air Depth, use of EANx with standard Air Dive Tables, common gas mixing procedures

and more!

​NAUI Search & Recovery Diver

 

At some point in your diving adventures, you or a buddy will either loose or find something underwater and the knowledge and skills you gain in Search and Recovery Diver will help you when you do.  Learn about underwater navigation, compass techniques, problems, methods, equipment and hazards of limited visibility diving, proper search methods and techniques, how to handle light salvage or recovery, rigging and knot tying and underwater metal detecting.

Start exploring sunken vessels, aircraft, and other amazing wrecks in our underwater world!  During the course our NAUI SCUBA instructor will teach you about safety hazards and cautions associated with wreck diving, special risks of overhead environments, entanglement, limited visibility, deep diving, equipment, ​locations of wrecks, sources of information, search methods, underwater navigation, legal aspects, artifacts, treasure, salvage, archaeology and more!

​

​NAUI Ice Diver

 

Our NAUI Ice Diver course provides a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to minimize risks of diving under ice. Upon successful completion of the Ice Diver course, you are qualified to plan and execute ice dives that do not require staged decompression. 

Your training includes developing proficiency in many skills including equipment removal and replacement, underwater navigation, use of harnesses and line techniques, silt-out/black-water procedures, exposure hazards and treatment, ice cutting and characteristics, signaling, atmospheric conditions and characteristics of ice structure, wind chill factors, cold stress, dehydration and first aid, surface clothing and dry suits, penetration holes, and dive site preparation.

​NAUI Training Assistant

 

If you possess the desire to assist in the training of other divers, this course might be for you.  Learn the skills and knowledge necessary to perform as a training assistant during diver training courses overseen by an active-status NAUI Instructor.  You will learn how to temporarily directly supervise students while an instructor conducts skills with other students, how to escort students on the surface or on underwater tours, how to assist an active-status NAUI Instructor with other tasks such as compass navigation and underwater communications, how to assist divers with cramps, anxiety, breathing difficulties, and signs of pre-panic., how to escort a diver to safety, how to escort divers during an open water dive and how to perform a SCUBA diver rescue.

​NAUI Divemaster

 

Would you like to lead dives and dive trips taking certified divers to dive sites all over the world?  If so, become a Divemaster!  The Divemaster rating is the highest level of leadership-level certification, with the exception of Instructor. The program is designed to train experienced and knowledgeable divers to organize and conduct enjoyable open water dives for certified divers.

To get started the preferred minimum certification level is Assistant Instructor.  If you do not possess the preferred certification, you may be accepted for training only if you meet the following criteria:  Master SCUBA Diver, SCUBA Rescue Diver (or equivalent), documented 60+ open water dives, First Aid Training and CPR Training.


Qualifications of Graduates:

​

  • Qualified to organize and conduct dives for certified divers if the diving activities and locale approximate those in which the Divemaster is trained.  Additional training, knowledge or experience is necessary for the Divemaster who desires to organize highly specialized activities, such as wreck penetration, cavern or ice dives or enter a new locale.

  • Qualified to organize and conduct NAUI Recognition (such as International Diver) and Experience Programs (such as Stingray Experience) and award appropriate recognition materials to participants.

  • Qualified to assist an active-status NAUI Instructor in diving courses.

  • An active-status NAUI Divemaster who completes a NAUI-DAN First Aid Instructor orientation, who has completed all required NAUI-DAN orientation modules and is using the NAUI-DAN training and support materials, may teach the NAUI-DAN First Aid programs.

  • If all other prerequisites are met, a current NAUI Divemaster is qualified to enter a NAUI Instructor Training Course (ITC).

Course fees do not cover academic training materials or SCUBA gear for open water dives.  Divemaster students shall furnish and be responsible for the care and maintenance of their own diving equipment.  The instructor shall initially assist candidates in checking all their gear to ensure it is adequate and in proper working order.  Charter operator fees for boat diving and wreck diving are also not included.

Everyone ages 18 and up, in good physical condition, with an Advanced SCUBA Diver certification and Rescue Diver certification, and current First Aid and CPR certifications is encouraged to enroll.

NAUI Refresher SCUBA

 

If you're a certified diver and have not been diving for more than a year, update your skills with a Refresher Course. Our SCUBA Instructor will guide you through skills in the pool, and will invite you to one class session, if there is a need to review diving theory and dive tables.

Your course fee covers classroom session, instructor fees, open water dives and use of tanks and weights.

​

Course fees do not cover use of SCUBA gear.  There is an additional $25 charge for the use of diving gear.  And, if participants need a replacement or updated certification card, a $35 registration/card fee also applies.
